What next for Europe in an increasingly unpredictable political world?

This article argues that Europe is facing a profound crisis of purpose and credibility amid the breakdown of the post-WWII international order, particularly in the contexts of Gaza, Ukraine, and Iran. The EU's longstanding identity as a normative power is being undermined by its passivity in the face of grave violations of international law, especially its muted response to Israel’s actions in Gaza, its mishandling of diplomacy with Iran, and its overreliance on U.S. support in Ukraine. As the U.S. becomes increasingly unpredictable and retreats from multilateral commitments, Europe must urgently pursue strategic and security autonomy, including enhanced defence spending, independent diplomatic initiatives, and deeper cooperation with like-minded global partners. Only by reasserting its normative values through concrete action can Europe remain a credible actor in an increasingly volatile world.
